Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Awarded AFCPE Scholarship

The Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE) scholarship will cover the expenses for Society staff members to attend financial coaching classes.

ARLINGTON, VA (December 2021) – NMCRS was selected as one of the nonprofits to receive an AFCPE Capacity Building Group Scholarship. AFCPE is a nationally recognized leader in financial counseling, coaching, and education. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable nonprofit community-based organizations the training and resources to positively impact the financial security for all communities.

In total, NMCRS was awarded 15 scholarships from AFCPE, with 10 participants in the Money Management Essentials Course (MME) and five students pursuing the AFC Certification. NMCRS will benefit from this opportunity because Society staff members provide financial counseling and assistance to Sea Service families in need. Through this program, NMCRS scholarship participants will further their professional development and stay current on economic issues impacting the military community. The coursework will also help Society caseworkers find creative solutions to educate clients who seek financial assistance from NMCRS.

“I have found several of the resources referenced throughout the course very helpful and informative,” said NMCRS Great Lakes Caseworker, Lisa Davis. “I am looking forward to utilizing what I am learning to assist our clients in improving their financial knowledge and goals, and I truly appreciate this opportunity to expand my financial knowledge and education at the same time.”

In addition to Society Caseworkers benefiting from this opportunity, the Training Department at NMCRS has found ways to incorporate the AFCPE financial coaching classes into their own curriculum.

“Much of the information highlighted in the Foundations of Financial Counseling module ties together the Society’s training objectives for caseworkers,” shared Susan White, Training and Development Instructional Designer. “We are identifying areas in our existing curriculum where we can expand on skills referenced in this module and enhance staffs’ collaboration with our service members and clients.”
